Frequently Asked Questions
What is Physical Therapy?
Physical Therapy professionals are licensed
health care providers. Physical Therapists evaluate and treat
people with problems that affect their ability to move and
function in their daily lives. These problems can include
musculoskeletal or neurological impairments. Physical therapy
is concerned with identifying and maximizing quality of life
and movement potential within the spheres of promotion,
prevention, treatment/intervention, and rehabilitation. This
is often accomplished with hands on technique, exercise,
modalities, and patient education.
Do I need a Doctor's Referral to schedule a
Physical Therapy appointment (Direct Access)?
Direct Access legislation allows you to
schedule a physical therapy evaluation and be treated for a 30
day period WITHOUT a physician's referral. Verification of
insurance is needed before being seen as not all insurances
recognize Direct Access. Certain exceptions apply that may not
allow the therapist to continue treatment under direct access
and may require a referral or consultation with your primary
care physician or specialist. Please phone our office if you
have further questions about direct access.
How Can Physical Therapy Help Me?
Physical Therapy can help you to:
-
Determine the cause of pain or dysfunction
-
Increase muscle strength and endurance
-
Increase flexibility and range of motion
-
Decrease pain or swelling
-
Promote healing of injuries
-
Improve ability to do activities of daily
living
-
Prevent future injuries through education and
home exercise programs
Will My Insurance Cover Physical Therapy?
Most forms of physical therapy treatment are
covered by your health insurance, but the coverage will vary
with each plan (see Health Insurance). If you are not sure of
your physical therapy coverage with your health insurance
plan, please contact your insurance company prior to your
initial evaluation. Some people may choose to pay for physical
therapy directly. If you plan to pay for physical therapy out
of your own pocket, please talk with us about our flexible
payment options.
